Vinyl tile
Vinyl tile can come up with no PSCAA notice, provided it is lifted piece by piece instead of being smashed. Crews control the dust and drop each tile into a container labeled nonfriable asbestos waste.
Typical cost in Bellevue
Sheet vinyl, vinyl tile and the adhesive beneath can contain asbestos. Once a sample is positive, Bellevue Asbestos Removal takes the floor up one layer at a time, so tile and adhesive never get ground into dust.
PSCAA requires no notice to remove nonfriable material, and its homeowner page names vinyl asbestos tile and mastic as examples. It does require a particular removal method. We handle floors in Bellevue, Mercer Island and Clyde Hill.

Vinyl tile can come up with no PSCAA notice, provided it is lifted piece by piece instead of being smashed. Crews control the dust and drop each tile into a container labeled nonfriable asbestos waste.
Mastic is tested separately. PSCAA bans sanding, grinding and sawing under its nonfriable method, so a subfloor cannot be ground clean with power tools, and the adhesive has to come off another way.
For sheet vinyl, look at the layer underneath. A felt or paper backing that hand pressure can turn to powder when dry is friable in PSCAA’s terms, and a notice is due once 48 square feet or more comes out in a calendar year. Only a sample tells which kind you have.
Floor jobs are small in area but have a few moving parts.
Wait until the old floor is up before pricing repairs underneath. That is when gouges, moisture damage and leveling problems become visible, so the scope should allow for them.
Carpet or newer vinyl can sit on top of old tile. Layers that the new floor will disturb are sampled, and a layer that can stay put may simply be covered with underlayment.
Once nonfriable material is off the floor, it belongs in a labeled container. For what happens next, PSCAA says to call a local disposal company.

Related reading depends on the rest of the project. A new ceiling above the floor is covered on popcorn ceiling removal, and the sampling that comes first, always, is on asbestos testing and surveys. Siding, rentals and teardowns each have a page, linked from the Bellevue Asbestos Removal home page.
