A little preparation keeps the job short.
Clear the room
Little preparation is needed from you beyond moving furniture. If a piece has to stay, cover it. Fixtures on the ceiling, whether a fan, a light or a smoke detector, get taken down or shielded by the crew, which also seals the room in plastic before scraping.
Pick the finish
Pick the finished surface before work starts. A skim coat, new board and a smooth finish each want the ceiling left a slightly different way, and the crew can plan for it.
If you live in the house
Do-it-yourself ceiling work is possible only in a single-family house the owner lives in. PSCAA’s instructions for popcorn ceilings cover that case. Everything else in the removal rules, from wet methods to containment and disposal, applies to the owner exactly as it does to a contractor, and PSCAA still urges certified help. Landlords, tenants and condo owners are not covered.
