Cement shingle siding and some roofing can contain asbestos. Bellevue Asbestos Removal samples each exterior material before the work starts and takes it off in a way that keeps the shingles whole and wet.

The two materials are regulated differently. PSCAA counts cement asbestos products as friable but lists asbestos roofing as nonfriable, which changes the notice rules for each. We handle exteriors in Bellevue, Mercer Island and Clyde Hill.

Siding and roofing options

Cement shingle siding

Under PSCAA’s work practices, cement asbestos board is a nonabsorbent friable material, so its exposed surfaces are kept continuously wet while it comes off. Crews pry the shingles loose intact, lower them, then bag or wrap them. Snapping or cutting them dry is out.

Siding over original wood

When shingles were nailed over earlier wood siding, removing them exposes it. Repair or replacement of that wood is then part of the plan.

Roofing

PSCAA’s homeowner page places asbestos roofing among nonfriable materials, which need no notice. Condition and removal method can change that picture for a specific roof. Confirm with PSCAA before starting, and do not break or grind the material.

Soffits, glazing and caulk

Smaller exterior parts can contain asbestos too. They are sampled along with the siding. Only friable quantities count toward the yearly thresholds. Caulk and other nonfriable parts do not.

Planning exterior work

Exterior work depends on the weather.

Rain

Wet weather is a poor match for exposed walls and loose shingles, so a dry stretch is the better time to schedule.

Ground protection

Plastic laid on the ground below the wall collects what falls. Because the shingles are wetted as they are removed, debris stays damp, and it all goes into the waste bags together.

New siding

Choosing new siding is a separate decision from the asbestos work, and it can involve its own city requirements. Before you order material, the Bellevue Permit Center at 425-452-4898 is the office to ask.

Bellevue homeowners comparing options can read asbestos testing and surveys for how exterior samples are taken, or pre-demolition asbestos abatement if the whole house is being replaced. The services on the other pages are listed on the Bellevue Asbestos Removal home page.
